Park Forest Police Seek Missing Woman

Dana Hayes

Dana Hayes

Park Forest, IL– The Park Forest Police Department is attempting to learn the whereabouts of Dana Hayes, who has been missing from her Park Forest home since Monday, January 25, 2010, police said Thursday afternoon. According to her family, Ms. Hayes dropped her son off at Rich East High School Monday morning but never arrived at her place of employment. The license plates on her car were run by the South Holland Police on the morning of January 25, but neither she nor the car has been seen since.

The South Suburban Major Crimes Task Force is assisting in the search for Ms. Hayes, a rare move in a missing person’s case, according to police.

According to Ms. Hayes family, it is totally out of character for her to be gone from home and not notify her son or other family members, or to not appear at work.

Ms. Hayes is described as an African American 35-year-old female, 5’2” tall, weighing 135 pounds with brown hair and brown eyes. Her car is a 2005 silver Kia Spectra four door, Illinois license plate A273099. The vehicle has a Masonic placard with the letters OES on the trunk lid.

The Park Forest Police Department is asking anyone who might have information on Ms. Hayes or her vehicle to contact Detective Brian Rzyski at 708-748-1309, or Deputy Chief Mike McNamara at 708-748-8390.

Original Anti-Gay Cartoon in Notre Dame’s Observer Was Equally Horrible

Notre Dame gay fine by me t-shirt

Both versions of the strip considered by editors, including the original rejected submission (second from the top). Beneath the strips is a gmail chat between one of the comic creators and an Observer staffer.

I was patient, I believe, with the flap over the anti-gay comic strip Mobile Party that ran in Notre Dame’s Observer earlier this month. I was patient and more forgiving until I saw the original comic considered by editors at the Observer. In the original, the punch line was uglier, if that’s at all possible.

From IrishCentral:

The cartoon depicts a conversation between two figures that reads:

“What’s the easiest way to turn a fruit into a vegetable?"

“No idea.”

“A baseball bat.”

Earlier, the cartoonist, who has not yet been named, posted the original version of the cartoon on his blog. In this version, it shows the punch line as “AIDS” instead of “a baseball bat.” The paper, he claimed, preferred “not to make light of fatal diseases.”

The original chat between the Observer and creators of the comic strip is above. According to The Observer, the primary authors of the strip are Notre Dame seniors Colin Hofman, Jay Wade and Lauren Rosemeyer.

What were these young adults thinking? How could they have possibly thought that either of those jokes were acceptable?

From College Media Matters:

Among the criticisms emanating from faculty and students at Notre Dame and its sister school St. Mary’s, here is part of a statement from student representatives of St. Mary’s Straight and Gay Alliance (Notre Dame does not officially recognize a GSA-related group on its campus): “You may not like it but Notre Dame and Saint Mary’s is a home to lesbian, gay and bisexual students. Your call as both a Christian and as a human being is to respect them. Making light of the very real threat of homophobic motivated hate crimes is a poor excuse for humor and a despicable action. I completely support and defend a person’s freedom of belief, expression and speech. However, when expressing that belief takes the form of language which encourages violence against a group of people, you have crossed a professional and ethical line.”

Similarly, in a piece touching on the comic’s status as a symbol of a larger discriminatory and ignorant mindset at the school, a Notre Dame sociology professor writes, “This [the comic controversy] is no isolated incident on our campus. . . . Getting a cheap laugh at the expense of the abused, bashed, disabled and even murdered not only belittles these horrific experiences but encourages more violence.”

The administration at the University of Notre Dame must step up and do more. The administration must finally sponsor a gay-straight alliance. That takes courage in the face of the United States Catholic bishops who are so incredibly out of touch, and the Vatican, which exists in a parallel universe.

What would Jesus do? I know that’s a simple question.

The answer is simple too.

The University of Notre Dame must finally and completely embrace its gay and lesbian students, faculty and staff.

Coward Shoots 15-Year-Old In Back Outside Hubbard High School

From the Chicago Sun-Times:

A 15-year-old student was shot in the back Tuesday afternoon just two blocks from a Southwest Side high school — one of 38 schools in the city receiving federal funding as part of a new anti-violence campaign.

The shooting happened at 63rd Street and Springfield Avenue at 1:05 p.m., police News Affairs Officer Veejay Zala said. A 15-year-old boy suffered a gunshot wound to the back, but ran in the direction of Hubbard High School at 6200 S. Hamlin Ave. and was attended to by an ambulance there.

Fire Media Affairs Chief Kevin MacGregor said one person was transported in serious to critical condition to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn.

Police said the boy was later listed in “stable” condition.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the victim, and we hope the shooter is brought to justice soon. May this be the last.

Would You Kill For Drew Peterson?

Drew Peterson’s stepbrother, Thomas Morphey (left), took the stand Thursday in a hearing to decide whether prosecutors can use ‘hearsay’ evidence.

I shudder just to write that headline. Hearing a question like that from someone I’m close to would really give me pause.

Drew Peterson allegedly said something like that to his stepbrother.

From the Chicago Sun-Times:

A day before Stacy Peterson vanished, Drew Peterson confided that his fourth wife was seeking a divorce — then asked a startling question, Thomas Morphey testified Thursday.

“How much do you love me?” Peterson asked, according to Morphey, his stepbrother. “Enough to kill for me?”

Their Oct. 27, 2007, conversation left Morphey shaken — and convinced that Peterson was planning to kill his 23-year-old wife, Morphey said.

Those fears grew a day later when Drew Peterson asked for help in moving a 3 1/2-foot-tall blue barrel out of his Bolingbrook home, particularly when Morphey picked up one end of the 140-pound container.

“It felt warm,” said Morphey, whose courtroom statements closely followed information he provided in an exclusive 2008 interview that ran in the Chicago Sun-Times. He said in that interview he believes Stacy Peterson’s body was in the plastic container he helped Peterson carry out of the house on Oct. 28, 2007.

The Sun-Times reports that Morphey acknowledged he was so upset by his actions that he took an overdose of prescription drugs the next day in a suicide attempt. He said he was contacted by police investigators after being released from the hospital and provided them information about Peterson’s alleged actions.

Innocent until proven guilty, and I hope the court does everything possible to ensure this is a fair trial.

Because it’s going to be incredibly ugly.

Notre Dame’s Observer Apologizes for Gay-Bashing Cartoon

From NBC Chicago:

The independent student newspaper at the University of Notre Dame has published a staff editorial apologizing for a cartoon that made a joke about violence against gays.

“What’s the easiest way to turn a fruit into a vegetable?” one character ask another in the cartoon.

“No idea,” the second character replies.

“A baseball bat,” the first character says.

The editorial Friday says The Observer newspaper created an “egregious” error in judgment with the cartoon published two days earlier. Assistant managing editor Aaron Steiner said the newspaper plans to reveal the results of an internal review on Monday.

“Publishing commentary that seems to encourage or support hate against fellow human beings is inexcusable,” the editorial staff said.

As a Domer, I am beside myself, trying to understand how this slipped through the editorial process, how this made it to print.

All the editors of The Observer should resign.

This was inexcusable.

Honestly, these kids should be ashamed.

And that’s what they are.

Kids. Don’t advocate murder, ever again.  Because that’s what you did.

There’s still time for you to become adults.  Grow beyond this gaffe.  Step back.

You’ll be fine.

But you gotta eat crow on this one.  That’s all.

Employees Safe But Frightened After Matteson Hostage Situation

Police say none of the employees at a Sprint Store in Matteson were injured during a hostage situation Wednesday night. They were, however, frightened by the experience.

From ENEWSPF:

A possible hostage situation involving an armed gunman at the Sprint Store in Matteson was resolved shortly after 8:30 p.m. Wednesday night when police discovered the alleged robber had fled before police arrived.

Police were dispatched to the Sprint Store, 4858 211th Street Matteson Center, Matteson, around 6:30 p.m. According to police at the scene, it was believed that an armed gunman was in the store holding hostages.

Employees at Panera Bread next to the Sprint Store received a call from the Matteson Police Department at approximately 6:35 p.m. advising them to put the store on lockdown. Patrons were immediately advised to vacate the front of the store and congregate an area away from windows. Meanwhile, a manager locked all doors to the establishment, advising patrons that no one was permitted to leave the store.

A strong showing of police followed shortly after, including officers and detectives from neighboring Olympia Fields and Park Forest. According to police at the scene, employees at the Sprint Store were ordered into an office by the alleged perpatrator, who then fled the store. Employees in the Sprint Store were unaware the suspect had left the building.

Olbermann: President Obama Admits National Security System Failed (Video)

Visit msnbc.com for breaking news, world news, and news about the economy

President Obama admitted today the natiional security system failed on Christmas Day, 2009, and disaster was averted by "brave individuals." According to Keith Olbermann, President Obama said today, "This was a screw-up that could have been disastrous. We dodged a bullet, but just barely. It was averted by brave individuals, not because the system worked. And that’s not acceptable. While there will be a tendency for finger-pointing, I will not tolerate it."

According to the President, the United States had all the intelligence it needed to prevent the alleged terrorist from boarding the plan, but the intelligence was not fully analyzed or leveraged.

The video above includes Olbermann’s complete analysis of the President’s meeting today with 20 top officials representing the entire security and intelligence apparatus.

Gov. Quinn Rethinks Early-Release Program Again

Gov. Pat Quinn is doing an about-face again regarding his previous early-release policies. From NBC Chicago:

Gov. Pat Quinn is suspending a second early release program for Illinois prison inmates until he names a safety officer to review it.

This release program was announced in September and was billed as a way to cut costs. Officials said it would include about 1,000 nonviolent offenders.

I covered this in September, and agreed, at the time, with the early release. Here’s part of the story that was on the Sun-Times in November (since archived):

Gov. Quinn Tuesday defended his plan to release up to 1,000 inmates, a step that begins this week and eventually could save the cash-strapped state $5 million a year.

By the end of this week, 62 non-violent offenders who are within a year of their scheduled release dates will be freed in the first wave of Quinn’s early-release initiative.

"We’re going to do this because we do have financial challenges. But at the same time, we’re going to do it in a way that always protects the public," Quinn said during an appearance in Chicago to announce the opening of a new veterans home.

Quinn said those released will be under "constant electronic monitoring" while on parole, and the governor expressed optimism that none of those being set free early will be a threat to society.

"Hopefully they learned their lessons in jail and won’t repeat their crimes," Quinn told reporters.

His administration refused to divulge the names of those in the first wave of early releases.

Give Quinn credit for trying something different.

I don’t know what the solution is. I do know that our prison system is over-crowded with non-violent offenders.

Obama’s Effigy Hung in Plains, GA, Pres. Carter’s Hometown

Obama effigy

Disturbing news from the Deep South, this time drawing the attention of the United States Secret Service.

From WALB in Plains, GA:

A doll found hanging off a Main Street building in Plains is causing controversy.

Controversial enough to get the United States Secret Service involved.

Witnesses say it was an image of President Barack Obama with a rope around his neck, and the display was found hanging in one of the city’s most recognizable sites dedicated to former President Jimmy Carter.

A few people were able to snap pictures of the black doll before it was taken down.

The Chicago Sun-Times ties the image more closely to President Obama:

Television shows the doll hanging in front of a sign that says "Plains, Georgia. Home of Jimmy Carter, our 39th President." A witness said the doll had a sign with Obama’s name on it.

The Secret Service is handling the situation, and will not have a comment until next week, WALB reports.

Danish Police Stop Attack on Cartoonist who Drew Cartoon Prophet Muhammad

From the New York Times:

Police foiled an attempt to kill an artist who drew a cartoon depicting the Prophet Muhammad that sparked outrage in the Muslim world, the head of Denmark’s intelligence service said Saturday.

Jakob Scharf, who heads the PET intelligence service, said a 28-year-old Somalia man was armed with an ax and a knife when he attempted to enter Kurt Westergaard’s home in Aarhus shortly after 10 p.m. (2100 GMT) on Friday.

The attack on the artist, whose rendering was among 12 that led to the torching of Danish diplomatic offices in predominantly Muslim countries in 2006, was ”terror related,” Scharf said in a statement.

”The arrested man has according to PET’s information close relations to the Somali terrorist group, al-Shabaab, and al-Qaida leaders in eastern Africa,” he said.

Police shot the Somali man in a knee and a hand, authorities said.

More from Reuters:

Westergaard, 74, who depicted Prophet Mohammad with a bomb in his turban, was not hurt in the incident, a police spokesman said.

He said police were investigating whether the Somali man acted alone in the attempted attack at Westergaard’s home, which is widely reported to be under tight security.

Last year, U.S. authorities arrested two men in Chicago who were suspected of planning attacks on Westergaard and his newspaper Jyllands-Posten, which published the caricatures of Prophet Mohammed.

For your consideration, without comment.

Anyone?
